A BIT OF OAK BROOK HISTORY
Located in DuPage County, Illinois, the Village of Oak Brook boasts a storied past dating back to the early 19th century. Initially a rural landscape, it attracted European settlers with its fertile land, ideal for farming and agriculture.
The community's transformation began in the mid-1930s when local homeowners and farmers formed the Community Club, establishing Oak Brook's unique identity separate from its neighboring villages, Hinsdale and Elmhurst. A key figure in Oak Brook's development was Paul Butler, a prominent civic leader and landowner. Butler envisioned a planned community and began acquiring land to realize this dream, establishing the Sports Core on his property—a multiuse facility that included nationally renowned golf and polo clubs.
Oak Brook officially became a village in 1958, marking a significant turning point in its history. The 1960s and 1970s saw rapid growth and expansion, transforming Oak Brook from its rural origins into a thriving suburban community. This period of development attracted major corporations, with companies like McDonald's Corporation and Ace Hardware establishing their headquarters in Oak Brook. The presence of these corporate giants, along with the development of upscale shopping centers such as the Oakbrook Center, fueled the village's economic prosperity.
Despite its growth, Oak Brook has successfully preserved its natural beauty and green spaces. This commitment to maintaining parks and recreational areas provides residents with numerous opportunities for outdoor activities and relaxation. The village's mayor-council system plays a crucial role in ensuring the community's well-being, dedicating itself to providing essential services such as public safety, infrastructure maintenance, and community development to enhance the quality of life for all residents.
Oak Brook's appeal stems from its unique blend of economic vitality, affluent neighborhoods, excellent schools, and high quality of life. With a population of 7,942 as of 2023, Oak Brook remains a sought-after destination for new residents and businesses drawn by the suburban lifestyle that offers easy access to urban amenities.
This charming village perfectly epitomizes an idyllic suburban haven, where history harmoniously meets modern convenience. Oak Brook truly offers the best of both worlds.
